When four-wheel drive is worth it, and when it is not
A 4x4 in Iceland is sometimes essential and sometimes a waste of money. It depends on the season, where you want to go and whether F-roads are on your list. Here is how to decide.
| Trip | Summer (May–Sep) | Winter (Oct–Apr) |
|---|---|---|
| Reykjavik, Golden Circle, south coast | 2WD is fine | 4x4 recommended |
| Ring Road (Route 1) | 2WD is fine | 4x4 strongly recommended |
| Snaefellsnes, Westfjords | 2WD on main roads | 4x4, and check every day |
| F-roads, Highlands, Landmannalaugar | 4x4 required by law | Closed |
In winter a 4x4 does not make you immune to ice, but it helps on snowy side roads, steep driveways and car parks that are not cleared. The best safety measures are good tyres, slow speeds and checking conditions before you leave.
F-roads are mountain tracks marked with an F before the number, such as F208 to Landmannalaugar. They usually open from late June to early September, depending on snow, and only 4x4 vehicles are allowed on them. Some cross unbridged rivers. Rental insurance almost never covers water damage, so cross only when you are sure of the depth, follow the line used by other vehicles and, if in doubt, do not cross. Driving off marked roads and tracks is illegal everywhere in Iceland and heavily fined.
In winter, rental cars come with winter or studded tyres. Ask the company to confirm this when you book.

The same rules apply as for any car, with higher stakes: gravel protection matters more on unpaved roads, sand-and-ash cover matters on the south coast, and water damage on fords is excluded almost everywhere. Some credit cards exclude 4x4 vehicles from their rental cover, so check before relying on it. More on the car rental Iceland page.
You do not need a 4x4 to see the aurora: the best dark spots near Reykjavik are reached on paved roads. If you like the idea of an off-road night without driving on icy tracks yourself, a guided northern lights jeep tour gives you the experience with a local guide at the wheel.
A guided 4x4 hunt for the northern lights, with the driving left to a local guide.

Super jeeps and 4x4s can leave paved roads and reach viewpoints away from where the coaches park. This tour adds treats, hot cocoa and photos of the group under the sky. It is one of the more expensive hunts, but the small group and the off-road reach are what you pay for.
Check availabilityIt is strongly recommended from October to April, especially outside the Reykjavik area. Good winter tyres and careful driving matter just as much.
Not for the Ring Road, the Golden Circle or the south coast. You need one only for F-roads in the Highlands.
Usually from late June to early September, depending on snow. Opening dates are published on the Icelandic Road Administration website.
Almost never. Water damage from crossing rivers is excluded by nearly all rental policies.
